HOW IT'S MADE
"Bleaching Coral"
Murrine Bowl
Murrine
Murrine is an ancient technique of patterning glass. Colored glass is stretched into long rods and cut into short cross sections that are stood on end like sushi.
Color Cup
Making the Vessel
The blue amythest layer of this bowl is on the outside. To keep this layer seperate from the pattern, a color cup is created. The colored glass bubble is formed into a parabola shape that is made first. The murrine decorated bubble is then lowered into the colored cup. This process is known as stuffing a cup.
Once the cup has been stuffed, the final mass of glass is shaped into the desired form on the blowpipe. It is then transferred to a punty (small mass of glass on the end of a solid pipe) to open the rim of the bowl into its final shape.
